There Skateboards is the board brand that grew out of Unity, the collective Jeffrey Cheung and Gabriel Ramirez started in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is openly queer and trans, which in American skateboarding still counts as news, but first and foremost it runs like any other skate company: a team, parts, pro models and a full-length every couple of years. Deluxe — home of Spitfire, Real, Anti-Hero and Krooked — has distributed it since 28 March 2022.

History

Unity began in 2012 as a monthly meet-up and grew into Unity Press & Skateboarding: zines, boards, parties and Unity Fest. There is the brand arm proper. Leo Bañuelos explained the split to Jenkem in April 2022: Unity is the community side with no commercial agenda, and There is “the core skate team version that serves capitalism a little bit”. The separation became formal in late 2021.

The first full-length, Ruining Skateboarding (2022), runs over an hour, was filmed by Rey Choto and Bañuelos himself, and its premiere tour opened in New York that March, where Jessyka Bailey was handed her first pro board on the spot. A homo company (2023), Peach Fuzz and Soft (2024) and Ripped in Half (2025) followed. Along the way Chandler Burton turned pro in August 2022, Shag in October 2023 and Poe Pinson in September 2025. In 2024 Nike SB gave them a Dunk Low, and Cheung used the Hypebeast interview to say the Olympics are “pretty messed up with their trans-exclusionary decisions”. That same year he and Ramirez curated Unity Through Skateboarding at SFMOMA.

The team

Chandler Burton, Marbie Miller, Poe Pinson, Shag, Kien Caples, Marie de Courcy, Jessyka Bailey, Samiya Smith, Sam Bolton and Belgium’s Lau Willems, the newest name on the list. Cheung skates in the videos too. Cher Strauberry, the first trans woman with a pro board, had a There model in 2022.

The decks

Widths run from 8.06” to 9.75”, and that’s more than a sales range: there’s the True Fit mould, shorter and with a 13.88” wheelbase for smaller feet, Marbie’s own shape, the egg Shag designed, and house moulds like the eagle and the easy rider. Finishes include stains, slick bottoms, glitter and holographic foil. Artwork comes from Cheung, Marie de Courcy, Emmie Zimmer of Kitty Cat Skateboards, Sam Ryser and Tom Rees. There are boards shared with Unity, collabs with Sneakdiss and Kitty Cat, and guest pro models such as Vanessa Torres’.

Who it’s for

A serious wood deck at standard pro-brand money, with the bonus that you’ll actually find off-standard sizes here: the 8.06” True Fit if normal decks feel oversized, or the 9.75” if you’re cruising. If you want a discreet graphic or a classic logo, look elsewhere — the aesthetic is hand-drawn and loud.
