Tensor

Tensor doesn’t make decks. It makes trucks, and from day one its whole pitch has been a single idea: weight. The brand was founded by Rodney Mullen, who came to it from an engineering background before he ever designed a truck, and the goal was to point real calculation and materials science at a problem no other truck solved cleanly at the time. How do you hold up under technical street skating without punishing the skater with extra grams? That engineer’s mindset, rather than a skateshop’s, is still what defines Tensor.

History

Tensor launched around 2000 inside Dwindle Distribution, the US house that also runs Almost, Enjoi, Blind, Darkstar and Cliché. Mullen, a co-founder of Almost, was the designer and public face from the start, and the brand arrived after nearly two years of development. The earliest models patented ideas like the buttonhead kingpin and polymer baseplate sliders, and the project kept refining itself over the years toward the magnesium line. It’s an American-design brand manufactured in China, and it has ridden Dwindle’s ups and downs, including stretches of reorganization and website relaunches. Treat the current state as a snapshot, because the catalog and distribution have shifted more than once.

Construction and weight

Two ideas run through the whole range. The first is weight: hollow axles and kingpins, and above all the magnesium line Tensor introduced around 2008, which it billed as 25% lighter than the industry average. The second is engineering detail. The baseplates carry replaceable polymer sliders that grind better than aluminum and swap out when they wear, small nibs on the plate to stop the truck from shifting, and Tensor’s own flanged interlocking bushings. Three heights, lo, mid and hi, let you match the truck to your wheel size and the way you skate. A collaboration with Oust Bearings extended the same logic to bearings.

The team

The team has always centered on the definitive tech-skating pairing, Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, joined over the years by Joey Brezinski, TJ Rogers and Ryan Gallant. Heavier names have passed through as well, including Chris Cole, Chris Haslam, Ronnie Creager and Ryan Sheckler. Tensor’s video presence has leaned more on ads and team clips than on full-length videos of its own, which is what you’d expect from a component brand.

Who it’s for
