Sk8mafia

Sk8mafia is a San Diego brand built on raw street skating and neighborhood attitude. Sources don’t fully agree on every early detail, but the character is clear: independent, rider-owned and tied to San Diego DIY culture rather than glossy marketing.

History

It started in the mid-2000s as a T-shirt project run by Dan Connelly and Josh Priebe before it grew into a full deck brand. The first video, “Way of Life,” dates to 2004, though some sources put the formal founding closer to 2007. Pro skater Peter Smolik shows up again and again around those early days as a key figure, the name most tied to the brand’s first chapter. Its highest-profile milestone came in 2014, when Wes Kremer was named Thrasher’s Skater of the Year while riding for Sk8mafia.

Where the name comes from

The idea is “mafia” as a family you can never leave. That’s where the long-running “Sk8mafia 4 Life” motto comes from, along with the whole clan aesthetic wrapped around the team. There’s nothing polished about it. The brand’s home turf has always been the street and the video part, not the ad campaign.

Video output and “Sk8mafia Saturdays”

Much of Sk8mafia’s identity was built on pumping out web footage at a pace almost nobody kept in that era. The weekly “Sk8mafia Saturdays” series was the flagship, dropping fresh clips every weekend long before weekly content became standard in skateboarding. On top of that steady stream the brand stacked up a run of full-length videos across the years, the kind of video legacy that defined it far more than any marketing push, including an am part that Thrasher later flagged as a classic.

The team

The biggest name in the house is Wes Kremer, the brand’s marquee rider and its most decorated. One footnote: per Wikipedia, Kremer was actually born in Tokyo to American parents. The current roster fills out with Jamie Palmore, Alexis Ramirez, Marshall Heath, Jimmy Cao, Alex Willms, Masaki Hongo, Tyler Surrey, Stephen Lawyer, Javier Sarmiento and Brandon Turner, with TJ Rogers a recent addition to the ranks.

Collaborations

The brand loves a pun on its own name. It has teamed up with Sweet Skateboards and Sour Skateboards on pun-titled projects, and matched that with the “Shang-Higher” apparel collab alongside JSLV.
