Sci-Fi Fantasy

Sci-Fi Fantasy is Jerry Hsu’s own thing. In 2017 the pro skater and photographer walked away from his Chocolate/Girl-adjacent sponsorship and started it, though not as a board company. It began as an apparel and art project run through Instagram: caps, tees and hoodies posted alongside intentionally crude, cryptic imagery, badly drawn sci-fi characters and conspiracy-style thumbnails. That surreal, deadpan sense of humor was the whole point from day one, and it still is.

History

Sci-Fi Fantasy started in 2017, but the thing that broke it wasn’t decks, it was hats. The minimalist logo caps and beanies built a cult following fast and crossed into fashion circles, reportedly worn by celebrities with no skate connection at all. On the back of that, the brand expanded from apparel into skateboard decks around 2020. From there Hsu grew the team the way you’d expect, through online solo parts, and the label went on to release its first full-length video. That steady stream of parts, capped by a debut feature, is what turned an Instagram experiment into a proper skate company.

The roster

The current team is led by founder Jerry Hsu, with Ryan Lay, formerly of Welcome, as the brand’s first pro. Around them sit Corey Glick, Arin Lester, Akwasi Owusu, Max Garson, Zak Anders and Gabriel Viking. The signing that got the most talk was Joa Field, better known as “Gifted Hater,” a skate commentator and influencer. Sci-Fi Fantasy is frequently credited as one of the first core skate brands to put a social-media skater on the team rather than a contest-circuit name.

Boards, graphics and construction

Decks are maple, pressed at the BBS woodshop according to multiple shop and brand-history sources. What sets the label apart is the graphic side: esoteric, surreal imagery, often loaded with pop-culture references, like the “Evil” deck built around Resident Evil and Milla Jovovich. Beyond boards and clothing, Sci-Fi Fantasy has released novelty accessories that fit its absurdist streak, spatulas, toothbrushes, sponges, things that show up next to the usual apparel drops.

Who it’s for

Sci-Fi Fantasy is independent in the strict sense: no outside investors, run on one artist’s vision. It works in limited runs and collectible drops rather than mass production, which puts it firmly in premium, cult territory. The team and the video output keep it grounded in real street skating, but the blend of skating, art, fashion and humor gives it pull well outside the park too.
