Plan B

Plan B is one of the most influential brands in the history of modern skateboarding. Founded in San Diego, California, in 1991 by Mike Ternasky, fresh from running H-Street, it redefined within a few years what a skate team could be and, above all, what a skate video could look like. The pairing of an exceptional roster with pioneering video production made the brand an instant benchmark whose technical, powerful tone still shapes street skating today.

History

Ternasky’s original project was built around a nearly unrepeatable team. Danny Way, Colin McKay, Rodney Mullen, Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Pat Duffy, Sean Sheffey and Sal Barbier all lined up under the same banner just as street skating was reinventing itself. Ternasky’s work behind the camera pushed the technical and creative bar to a level much of the industry took years to catch up with.

Ternasky’s death in a car accident in 1994 left the brand without its central figure. Danny Way and Colin McKay were left steering a project that was eventually shelved in the late nineties. In 2005, Way and McKay relaunched Plan B with backing from Syndrome Distribution, reviving the name and building a fresh team. Distribution and ownership shifted through several hands in the years that followed, including a licensing deal with Billabong, but the brand’s identity as a home for high-level street skating stayed intact.

Team

The current roster blends founding legends with contemporary street talent. Danny Way, Colin McKay, Pat Duffy and Sean Sheffey keep the link to the classic era alive, while Chris Joslin, Felipe Gustavo, Aurélien Giraud, Trevor McClung, Tommy Fynn, Lazer Crawford, Kristion Jordan and Jorge Simões represent the brand’s current face. It is a roster built for demanding street skating, with a clear lean toward technical work on gaps, rails and ledges.

Videos and legacy

Plan B’s reputation was built on video. Its nineties productions are routinely cited among the most important and influential ever made, and the brand’s return came with a new era of top-tier filmmaking. That video culture remains a central part of Plan B’s identity.
