Opera

Opera Skateboards is a young brand with a long résumé behind it. Bill Weiss launched it on May 30, 2023, a skate-industry veteran who had previously run Madness inside Dwindle Distribution. When Dwindle collapsed, Weiss built his own structure and started Opera from scratch, though with much of the same crew around him. The name is deliberate: Weiss reads it as “a performance of one,” which he calls skateboarding in a nutshell.

History

Opera didn’t arrive on its own. It launched under Sidewalk Distribution, a company Weiss co-founded with Louie Barletta, Bod Boyle and Steve Douglas after leaving Dwindle. And Sidewalk didn’t just release Opera: it also revived and housed sister brands Slappy Trucks and Jacuzzi Unlimited, so the whole thing arrived as a three-brand relaunch rather than a single debut. In practice it’s the logical continuation of what Weiss had spent years building in the States.

Graphics and construction

What makes Opera recognizable is its theatrical visual identity, tied to the world of opera and the mask. You get masks, masquerade imagery, surreal collages and symbolic motifs, a far busier and more dramatic language than the average street brand runs with. The brand positions itself as premium, “stand-out product,” and leans on both distinctive deck shapes and construction as selling points. It isn’t playing the budget card at all: the idea is a deck that stands out on the wall and under your feet.

The team

The roster has a clear transition backbone, which makes sense given where Weiss comes from, even if the brand is pitched as working for street too. The pros include Clay Kreiner, Jack Fardell, Sam Beckett, Trey Wood and Alex Perelson, heavy names in modern vert and bowl. On the amateur side there’s Nick Papa, Jedd McKenzie and Jeff Rasp, while the flow ranks feature Caroline Duerr, Hinano Kusaki and George O’Neill. It’s a team that came over as a block from Weiss’s previous project, and that shows in how much weight it carries for such a new brand.
